About the Poets 44

A timely anthology compiled by Wendy Cooling, with delightful, quirky illustrations by Piet Grobler. The poems not only celebrate the wonder of our earth but encourage children to reflect and question… This book will make a beautiful gift, but also deserves a place in every school library. - Bookseller

A beautifully realised and presented collection. - Bookseller

Children often overlook poetry books, but many of the most enjoyable 'stories' are in this genre. This thoughtful anthology includes 35 poems from poets past and present and encourages children to consider the impact of humans on the natural world. - Learning Support

Provides a good starting point for discussions on our influence on the world around us and what we want for the future. Piet Grobler's bold illustrations complement the poems and add meaning to the words. - Carousel

A thoughtful book for home and classroom. - School Librarian

It will make you think, make you angry, make you sad and make you wonder – and make you see what is around you with new eyes. The illustrations in this beautiful, hopeful, sometimes startling anthology have a spiky, elegance, beautifully combining sweeping colour-washes, delicate detail and inspired colour combinations; the selection of poems is assured and constantly interestingly. An ecological call to arms that is also a true pleasure. - Booktrust

Taken as a whole, the book is a cautionary tale. The illustrations, done in pencil and watercolors, are simple and uncluttered and appear on white backgrounds. Done in a folk-art style with many exaggerated features and sizes, the pictures do a lot to enhance the mood of each poem. The people depicted are diverse, which is apt for a book that is an anthem to the world. This is a lovely book for family sharing or to introduce ecology units - School Library Journal

A stunningly illustrated and inspiring collection of poetry that will encourage children to look with caring eyes at all nature's glories around them… Written in a warm, evocative language that every child can relate to. - Junior

A great concept - a collection of poems from all over the world, which really encourages children to celebrate our Earth and want to protect it for the future… The illustrations are powerful and add an extra dimension to the anthology. The book is aimed at KS2 children and is an absolute joy. It would be a welcome addition to any school. - English 4-11

Question

As asphalt and concrete
Replace bushes and trees,
As highways and buildings
Replace marshes and woods,
What will replace
The song of the birds?

Dreamer

I dreamt I was an ocean
And no one polluted me.

I dreamt I was a whale
And no hunters chased after me.

I dreamt I was the air
And nothing blackened me.

I dreamt I was a stream
And nobody poisoned me.

I dreamt I was an elephant
And nobody stole my ivory.

I dreamt I was a rainforest
And no one cut down my trees.

I dreamt I painted a smile
On the face of the Earth
For all to see.
