It's Lulu's birthday soon, but it's her brother Billy's birthday first. As cards arrive for Billy and not her, and her parents plan Billy's birthday party, Lulu becomes more and more cross. To spoil the fun, she hides the special ball that Billy's friend has given him. Billy is very upset when he can't find it, so he and his friends have to fly his kite instead. But then Lulu can't find her favourite yo-yo and suddenly she realises how Billy must feel.

A story about childhood jealousy and sibling rivalry, this charming book provides food for thought and discussion with young readers. Lulu's brother Billy was having a birthday.

"When's my birthday?" asked Lulu.

"Yours is soon," said her mother.

"But not as soon as Billy's."

But Lulu wasn't listening.

She was planning her birthday party.

The next day, Lulu looked through all the letters.

She thought some of her cards might come early.

There was nothing for her. Just some cards for Billy.

"Why has Billy got cards and not me?" asked Lulu.

"It's my birthday soon."

Her mother patted her on the shoulder. "Not yet, Lulu,"

she said. "Billy has cards before you, because his birthday is before yours."

Lulu took no notice. She wanted her birthday to come first.
