Among the important things you learn at school is something that has nothing to do with literacy, numeracy, making farting noises on a clarinet or growing etoilated plants on blotting paper. Until you work out how to make friends without being a suck-up, faking an interest in topics that bore you rigid or taking part in activities that make you feel bad about yourself, you can't start firing on all cylinders.
