Sumptuously illustrated, this is a picture book to savour. There is an almost mosaic, tactile quality about the massive pictures that this book. The personalities described, Solomon, David, the Queen of Sheba, are all larger than life. That, after all is the reason we continue to learn from the stories told about them. The pictures certainly enhance that impression. Some of the stories selected are well known but not all, Queen Esther is less celebrated and it is appropriate to include some characters that will add to the existing biblical knowledge of the reader. The stories, both new and familiar, are told simply but with a charm that encourages the reader to enter into the world of the characters. This is a KS2 text but could easily satisfy older readers or be used in a Sunday school setting with even younger children. - School Librarian
